Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)

‘Not everyone can do great things. But we can do little things with a lot of love.’

Saint Teresa of Calcutta is also known as Mother Teresa and is most remembered for her work helping the poor, sick and homeless. She was born in North Macedonia in 1910. Her family was religious, so she became a nun as a young woman. As a nun, Mother Teresa lived in a convent and was known as Sister Teresa. Whilst on a train journey, Mother Teresa received a message from God that she should help the sick and poor people in the Slums. She moved to Calcutta, India, to work there as a missionary and a teacher at St Mary’s High School for Girls. She received her name of ‘Mother Teresa’ after making a promise to God that she would spend her life helping the poor and sick. She showed kindness and compassion to everyone she met. She started a group called the Missionaries of Charity, which helped people who needed food, care and love. For her kind heart and hard work, she won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She sadly passed away in 1997. In 2016, the Catholic Church made her a Saint.
